Northcotton Farm (NCF) Guide

Introduction

"Several hobbits have disappeared recently in the vicinity of the Northcotton Farm. It was abandoned years ago, but something stirs within its grounds and a faint, sweet aroma wafts over the walls..."

NCF is the first instance in the "In Their Absence" instance cluster, and also the easiest.

NCF is a lv65 instance, and has no locks. The challenge quest is completable twice weeky, resetting on Monday and Thursday mornings.

NCF can be completed on either Tier 1 or Tier 2 difficulty. On Tier 2, mobs hit slightly harder and have more morale. The Challenge quest can only be completed when running the instance on Tier 2.

Group Composition & Roles

Group Composition

The RoE recommended group composition is as follows. Note that this is assuming a full on-level group.

  1. Ward/Guard/Champ/Cap - Tank
  2. Mins/RK/Cap - Healer
  3. Random - DPS

Roles

Tank

The Tank will primarily need to maintain agro on bosses, since the trash pulls are all fairly tame.

Healer

Healers will need to be healing during bosses, but depending on the group can mange doing DPS or 50/50 DPS & Healing during trash pulls.

DPS

Anything goes for the last class, but they will be the primary source of DPS in the 3-man, and need to be traited accordingly.

Requirements & Recommendations

Requirements

As with all instances, it is considered good practice to bring your own Hope & Scrolls. The following is therefore considered a typical requirement:

  • 1 (or more) x Scroll of Battle
  • 1 (or more) x Scroll of Warding
  • 1 (or more) x +5 Hope Token (15m duration or higher)
  • 10 (or more) x Morale/Power Pots (each)

Recommendations

+Stat Food

Food buffs to increase stats like Vitality are always handy, particularly if your stats are low.

+In-Combat Regen Food

Power can be an issue in long fights, so food which gives you a bit more in-combat power regen is useful. If you have a Lore-master in the group they will be power sharing to tanks/healers as a priority, everyone else will need to be fairly self-sufficient.

+Poison Resist Food

NCF is the "Poison" instance, so you will be seeing a lot of poisons, many of them being unpottable DoTs.

Part 1: Trash

If you're on In Their Absence: Chapter 1 and have spoken to the NPC in nearby Oatbarton, then the NPC you need to is just inside the entrance to hand it in and take Chapter 2.

Part 1 of the instance sees you fight trash pulls consisting of three different types of spiders:

Greenfields Tree-weaver ("Small Spider")

These have approximately 5,000 morale. These have no special abilities.

Greenfields Biter ("Medium Spider")

These have approximately 10,000 morale. Causes the Medium Poison debuff on players which deals 131 common damage every 3s for 12s.

Greenfields Trapper ("Large Spider")

These have approximately 20,000 morale. They have a three-tier building corruption effect on them called Corrupting Strength. This increases their melee damage up to a maximum of +50% at Tier 3. They will always start a fight with this effect at Tier 3, so it's good practice to keep it removed at all times. Also causes the Minor Power Drain fear effect on players which drains the target of 97 power every 3s for 12s.

Trash Pulls

The first pull consists of 2 small spiders and 1 medium spider. The second pull consists of 2 medium spiders and 1 small spider. Both pulls are very easy and should need minimal healing, if any.

You can then rescue the nearby Hobbit, who will open the next door to progress after a speech.

The third pull consists of 3 small spiders and 1 large spider.

The fourth pull consists of 1 medium and 1 large spider

The next area is a small pond with paths either side. There is a large spider patrolling on each path. It is possible to avoid both spiders by swimming through the lake if you prefer.

The fifth and final pull for Part 1 consists of 1 small spider, 1 medium spider & 1 large spider.

Part 1: Boss - Legbarthil

Legbarthil has three special abilities which you need to be aware of.

Acid Puddles

At certain short time-based intervals (10-15s), she will drop a puddle on top of her agro target. This deals a significant damage over time effect, so the tank should always move her around, not just so they are out of the puddle, but enough to allow the other fellowship members to be able to safely perform melee combat behind the boss without being in the puddle.

Roots

Legbarthil will often root any player that is not her agro target. This most commonly occurs to the DPS class. It cannot be avoided, but you do not want this effect combined with being inside a puddle.

Eggs

At three morale thresholds Legbarthil will raise her behind into the area, and drop an Egg on the floor. ALL members of the fellowship should kill it as fast as possible, as after 5 seconds of so, the egg will hatch spawning three spiderlings which will heal the boss significantly if they get into melee range of her. If Legbarthil heals, you WILL NOT get another egg for the same morale threshold. Therefore you will only ever get 3 eggs during the course of the fight.

Tactics

Begin the fight when tanking her at the back of the room where she starts. If you have a burglar, opening with a Trip/Tangle-foot from stealth to get in any early CJ is recommended. Every time she drops a puddle, the tank should move her around the edges of the room to minimise lost space due to puddles. Take care not to go too close to the entrance, or she may reset.

Keep this up throughout the fight. At the morale thresholds when she drops eggs (?k, ?k and ?k), all three of you should quickly nuke the eggs, even if this means staying in a puddle for a few seconds. If spiderlings hatch, you might be able to kill them before they reach the boss, otherwise keep up the Tank & Spank until she dies.

Part 2: Trash

Part two of the instance introduces two new enemies, both wolves:

Grass Stalker Tracker

These have approximately 10,000 morale. Causes the Slowed debuff on players which reduces movement speed by 25%.

Grass Stalker Hunter

These have approximately 22,000 morale. Has a debuff aura called Stench which gives all nearby players the unremovable effect Poison Fumes which deals 52 common damage every 3s. These enemies are always stealthed at the start of a pull.

Trash Pulls

The first pull is a final collection of spiders, consisting of ???. You can avoid these if you prefer my hugging the right hand wall to sneak past them. Once you have killed them or sneak past, turn left into the door that was previously closed.

The second pull consists of 3 Trackers.

The third and final pull consists of 1 Tracker and 1 Hunter.

Part 2: Boss - Umheryn

This boss is unique in the fact that it's a cauldron, and doesn't directly attack the player. Instead, this fight has some interesting mechanics:

Yellow Eye

Umheryn will cast yellow eyes randomly on members of the group. This causes you to drop acid puddle under your feet every ?s for ?s. These deal ? damage every ? seconds while you're stood in them, so it's best to keep on the move until it expires.

Water Bucket

There is a water bucket in front of the Hobbit House closest to the cauldron. Players can use the bucket to quench the flames underneath the cauldron when it start to boil over. While the cauldron is boiling over, Yellow Eyes can be cast on up to 2 players at any one time. If you use the bucket to stop the cauldron boiling over, Yellow Eyes can only be cast on 1 player at a time. Note that the Challenge quest for NCF require that you NEVER use the bucket to quench the flames, so only use the bucket if you are doing Tier 1 or Tier 2 Normal Mode.

Poisoned Pies

The Cauldron is being used to make special Posioned Pies to lure hobbits to their death. Every now and then, Hobbits will emerge from the nearby buildings. You will need to get in melee range of them and use the /slap emote to wake them up before they eat a poisoned pie off the table. If too many Hobbits die, you will fail the fight.

It is useful to turn the /slap emote into a button for this bossfight. To do this, type: /shortcut 1 /slap into the chat window. You can replace the number 1 with any number between 1-72 depending on where you want this skill on your bars (It will replace anything already in that slot). The main bar is slots 1-12, Quickslot Bar 1 is slots 13-24 and so forth.

Tactics

Start the fight by running towards the cauldron. Ranged classes can stay at range, while melee classes can spread out around the cauldron.

Every time a player gets the eye, they need to run around until it expires. This is a good time to /slap any active Hobbits, since you probably won't have anything else to do. Try not to drop any clouds in melee range of the cauldron, as this could mean that melee classes can't contribute DPS until it disappears.

If you are warned that the cauldron is starting to boil over, you can either use the Water Bucket (if doing T1 or T2 NM) or ignore it and continue DPS while being aware of the increased use of Yellow Eyes (T2 HM).

Keep up as much DPS as possible until the cauldron is destroyed, taking care to /slap any Hobbits that come out of their homes.

Part 3: Trash

Part 3 of the Instance introduces six new enemy types; two boars, and 4 goblins:

Long-grass Swine

These have approximately 10,000 morale.

Long-grass Tusker

These have approximately 22,000 morale.

Gramsfoot Waylayer

These have approximately 5,000 morale. Causes the Strange Posion debuff which deals 51 Common Damage every 10s for 20s. Also causes the Woozy Debuff which has no effect other than to make your screen go "Woozy".

Gramsfoot Spear-master

These have approximately 10,000 morale. Causes the Minor Power Drain Debuff which drains 68 power every 3s for 12s.

Gramsfoot Scout

These have approximately 10,000 morale. Drops posion clouds on the floor which cause the unremovale Posion Effect when stood in them which deals ??? damage every ???s.

Gramsfoot Warrior

These have approximately 22,000 morale. Has a tiered corruption called ??? which increases ???. Causes the Debilitating Poison debuff which deals 135 Common Damage every 10s for 20s. If this effect is not removed before it expires, it will apply an 8s stun to the player.

Trash

After defeating Umheryn, turn left out of the boss room and follow the farm round.

The first pull consists of 2 Swines and 1 Tusker.

The second pull consists of 2 Tuskers.

You then free the last Hobbit from a tree behind the second pull, then return to a door near the first pull where the Hobbit Tulip Grubb is standing. If you have been doing In Their Absence: Chapter 2, you can hand it in here to collect In Their Absence: Chapter 3.

After the door opens you can go though it straight into the third pull, which consists of 2 Waylayers and 2 Spear-masters. Once they are killed, follow the path around to the right.

The fourth pull consists of 2 Waylayers and 1 Warrior. Once they are killed, follow the path around to the right again.

The fifth pull consists of 1 Spear-master, 1 Scout and 1 Warrior.

The sixth and final pull consists of 2 Waylayers, 1 Scout and 1 Warrior. Once you ahve killed them you can enter the final boss room.

Part 3: Boss - Thadur the Ravager

Thadur has six special abilities you need to be aware of. You can know in advance what he's doing depending on what lines he says:

"Divided you shall fall!"

Thadur is casting a distributed AOE attack. All three members of the raid should group up with a few metres of each other to split the damage. Tip: all move so you are standing on top of Thadur.

"I shall unleash a gift upon those who face me!"

Anyone in front of Thadur needs to quickly run behind him, or they will take a massive hit. Since it should only be the tank in fron of him at any time, the tank should run though him to stand just behind him until his finished his attack. You'll know he's done it once he turns around to face you.

"You shall behold the power of the Darkthorn!"

Thadur is about to drop a large poison cloud underneath him, which causes the ??? effect on players stood in it, dealing ??? damage every ?s. Everyone should run away from Thadur and begin tanking him in a different spot. The puddles expire pretty fast (roughly 10s).

"Poisonous Vapours shall grant me strength!"

Thadur has just applied a corruption to himself which grants him a damaging aura called Major Posion Air. This deals 285 common damage every 3s until the corruption is removed.

"This poison shall have an interesting effect!"

Thadur will target a random person to apply a non-potable damage over time debuff called Strange Poison. This deals 211 common damage every 5s for 10s.

Fear Attack

Thadur can cast an unpottable fear effect called Running Scared which lasts for 9s on anyone who is not his agro target

Tactics

Have the tank tank him roughly where he starts, and turn Thadurs back on the rest of the fellowship. The other fellowship members should both stand in melee range behind Thadur, even if they are a ranged class, in order to better help with distributed AOE and corruption removal.

Be aware of the above special attacks, and respond appropriately to each one during the fight. Other than that, it's a fairly straightforward tank and spank fight.

Once Thadur is defeated, Bounder Boffin will appear in the boss room. If you have In Their Absence: Chapter 3 you can hand it in now and collect In Their Absence: Chapter 4.

After looting, a nearby door will allow you to quickly exit the instance.
