What You Should Know About Playing With... Burglars

Post by Balthelion » Tue Jul 05, 2011 3:58 pm

Roles:
The Burglar is primarily a CC & Debuffing class. However with the right trait and gear, it is also great for single-target DPS. These roles are not mutually exclusive: A burglar can maximise their CC ability and DPS by traiting (the correct combination of) 4 Red (DPS) & 3 Yellow (CC).

Stealth:
Burglars can enter stealth to can access to addtional (or improved) skills. Generally, they won't be using stealth in group content. However they may want to initiate on a boss with a conjunction, and commonly this starting conjunction is done using Stealth and Trip.

Positioning:
Many of the Burglars skills deal additional damage when striking from behind a target (and/or in Stealth). It's generally adivisable to allow burlgars to get into such a position, and remain there - So don't cause mobs to turn and face the burglar, or tank mobs in awkward places.

Conjunctions:
Burglars have (up to) 4 Conjunction starting skills. Exploit Opening is a guaranteed CJ (if it hits) with a 5m cd. Trip Is identical, but only usable in stealth. If not used as an opening move, The Burglar has to use Hide In Plain Sight as their only method of dropping into stealth in-combat so this can be used - dropping into stealth in-combat may cause them to loose their current stance bonuses, which they cannot re-apply in combat. Bags of Marbles are items crafted by Weaponsmiths that give a guaranteed CJ is sucessful (15m cd). Exposed Throat is a skill granted by a Legendary Trait which has a 20% chance to start a CJ. This skill has a 10s cd.

Stances:
Burglar's have 3 stances, in addition to Stealth. Mischief is the CC Stance. This halves the cooldown of Riddle so that a mob can be chain stunned. It also allows the use of other support skills. Stealth will disable the Mischief stance. Quiet Knife is the Burglar's DPS stance. If the Burglar is not required to do CC at any point, they will often use this stance. Stealth can be used while using this stance[/b]. Gambler is a debuff Stance that improves the effectiveness of chance-based damage debuffs on the target. This skill/traitline is rarely used.

Tricks & Trick Removals:
Burglar's can apply debuffs to targets known as Tricks. These include Counter Defense, Disable, Dust in the Eyes & Enrage. These provide debuffs while they are on the target (An enemy can only have one trick at a time). The Burglar also has other skills known as Trick Removals which have strong effects, but can only be used on enemies with an active trick on them. Effects include corruption removals, short hard stuns, self-heals and more. In combat, you will likely see a burglar debuff an enemy, then later briefly consume the trick with a trick removal skill, and promptly re-apply the debuff.

Crowd Control:
The Burglar's primary crowd control ability is called Riddle. This is a 30s Daze (35s if traited) with a 30s cd while in Mischief (60s otherwise). Unlike a lore-master, the Burglar does not specialise in AOE CC; Instead their focus is on keeping one valuable target pinned down with riddle, and general harassment of any other targets of interest. The Burglar can use the Startling Twist Trick Removal to apply an 8s Hard Stun on an enemy, which also removes corruptions. All of the burglars conjunction skills can be used to provide a stun/interupt in emergencies. While in Mischief, Burglars have access to an aditional CC skill called confound. This is a 15s debuff (reducable to 5s with legacies) which on expiry will stun 2 targets (4 if traited) for 30s. Confound has a 5m cooldown. The Burglar is also capable of other minor acts of CC, although these are generally long-cooldown, little-use skills.

Addle:
This is the burglar's interupt skill. It has a 15s cd, and also debuffs the target with a +25% Induction Multiplier (All inductions take 25% longer to complete) for 30s. With the Addle Cooldown & Addle Induction Multiplier legacies on Lengendary Burglars Tools, Addle will have a 5s cooldown and a 75% Induction Multiplier. This make Burglars THE BEST interupting class in the game. Addle is also ranged - 20m. Addle can effectively be an extra form of CC, allowing full control over a dangerous un-stunned target (such as Lore-masters in Sammath Gul).

Provoke:
Burglar's have a basic attack called Provoke which dumps agro on the enemies target. This can be extremely useful if used correctly in a group situation (or potentially dreadful). The Burglar can use this to dump extra agro on the person tanking a mob (read: THE tank). Alternatively, it can be used to raise the burglar's own threat if they are tanking a mob. It should NOT be used to try and get agro off of another person (read: The Healer) as you will be increasing their threat to the mob, not your own.

Reveal Weakness:
This is a Burglar skill used to mark an enemy target which provides a +8% (+10% if traited) Incoming Damage Buff on the target. This should always be used on bosses.

Cure Poison / Burglar's Antidote:
This is a poison removal skill with a 1m cooldown. Burglar's can generally manage their own Posion debuffs using this, but in cases where the group will suffer extensive poisons they will still need to assist the burglar just like any other fellow.

Ready & Able:
A Burglar panic button, this resets the cooldown on ALL burglar skills. This includes (but is not limited to): Riddle, Confound & HIPS. Tactically, this can be used for a once-only double Riddle on two separate targets in an emergency.

Share The Fun:
Burglars can pull one other person at a time with them into stealth. The fellow must remain within 5m of the burglar. This allows the burglar to smuggle fellows past mobs/pulls safely.

Worth knowing a couple of other burg points:

[1] Burg ranged weapons DO exist, not just stoop for a stone. Burgs can throw daggers and axes - ask a friendly weaponsmith. These have 30m range.

[2] Several burg skills are ranged (e.g. Riddle). Again, great for range pulls. Part of the burg cheat arsenal is the Riddle+HIPS two-step which is great for nuking bosses. Riddle the mob you want to pull, watch his mates follow you, HIPS, he'll come after you when the riddle wears off, defeat at your leisure.

I'll see if I can't get in touch with some kin members on E. I remember them talking about using a provoke mez for the sorecers/wargs, but cannot recall the details. I'll see if I can't get in touch with one of them to refresh my memory.

IIRC that was an alternative to Stealth>Trip>HIPS, which has now been prevented, so I imagine that no longer works too.

It very well could be, but then again, my Kin hasn't raided BG since OD came out. But I'll still ask about it. (I mean the Burg HiPs trick still works in SS, so....) :)

They've fixed that.

Although I'll confess I'm not sure whether I read that on test or live (odds are test, so it's still in-game until Isengard)

They did? Did not know that. We did SS 2-3 weeks ago and wanted to see this "exploit" and worked. And today i was reading about this exploit in OD, used on fear wing challenge (saw some movies). Well, was nice but still a little cheating :)
