Weekly Spotlight: Draigoch Raid Guide

Post by Balthelion » Mon Jun 25, 2012 1:13 am

Going to introduce a weekly splotlight of things on the website that people might not have noticed. Will be a lot more interesting once the new site is up, but still plenty to keep us going until then :)

-----

So, to start with something topical:

Draigoch Raid Guide

New to raiding? Just hit 75 on your first character and need to do a raid to get some gear? Well Draigoch is the easiest option raid wise, although there's still a lot going on taht you might not be aware of. Our handy raid guide will explain everything in detail so you can know what to expect, or understand what happened if you've already been!

Phase 2 is about 4 million. The change is "My breath is death and your lives are but a trifle in my presence." (Mmm, trifle).
Phase 3 is 3.2 million.

Yeah the morale thresholds are out of date, and he doesn't necessarily recover from a knockdown with the correct phrase anymore. but the rest is good

1. Know that Draigoch is a dragon but acts like a dramaqueen.
2. Know that if you are not aware of his lasers (coming from his eyes at the beginning) you are just one step away from being crispy bacon.
3. Note to the head-tank, it is better to direct the dps people by telling "north, south" instead of "left, right".
4. On phase 3 remain calm after his moves and take position under his belly. Beware of the fire puddles (hits around 850 to medium armors per tick).
5. During all dps scenes, be a dot to share the damage. Otherwise it only takes a second to die.
6. During first two phases always run towards 11 o'clock when you are getting out while he is getting up. On phase 3 stay on the gold pile.
7. When you finish the raid, run out! Dying of a huge dragon causes huge rocks to drop from the ceiling and kills you.
8. Know that Draigoch is literally the easiest raid in the game at the moment. A good and concentrated RoE group kills it in 22 minutes.

Phase 2 is supposed to be 75% (but they've kinda screwed up the boundary on this, cause he will start doing the phase 2 moves at about the 75% threshold, but won't actually say the phase 2 script until later)

Phase 3 is 50%

Sorry Gorv, but Turtle is still easier :P. A mediocre rangers group kills it in 2 minutes, a good Rangers group kills in less than a minute ;)

Why?? No, I don't agree with this at all! In every possible way I can think of, it is far better to use relative directions (left/right) than absolute ones (e.g. north, south etc). Just a couple of reasons, right off the top of my head:
First off, since Draigoch only ever moves ONE 'step' in any given direction it is much easier to just know which way to head next (to your left or your right), rather than having to stop and check the compass/map to know exactly where you are currently (which is fairly irrelevant at any given time, tbh, except for returning to the starting position), and interpret the direction given to figure out yourself which way you are to go to reach that new position. Also, the terms "north" and "south" are bad for another reason; they are ambiguous! Since Draigoch's positions aren't ever in the 'north' position but actually either in 'north-west' or 'north-east', it is actually very wrong to say e.g. "Go north!" - particularly if you're already in one of the two positions in the upper half of the map/compass. :)
But there's another reason as well: If you are the tank, and you're not using voice during the raid for whatever reason, then you need to either type directions manually into raid chat or use clickable shortcuts that will paste the desired text into raid chat for you. The latter is a very easy thing to do, BUT... if you're going to use absolute directions instead of relative ones, then you'd need FOUR different shortcut bindings instead of two, and need to take extra time to stop and check where you're currently at, which way to head next, and pick the right binding accordingly. This would waste MUCH precious time contrary to using just "left" or "right" quickly and easily. These seconds may not seem like much, but really do count particularly in phase 2.

All in all, using absolute directions instead of relative ones is a bad idea, imho; not only will it waste time (without any gain) for no reason at all, it is also ambigous and even confusing. And this is true no matter how much or little experience you have in the Draigoch raid. Sure, the raid is relatively speaking very easy as far as raids go, but for those that are in there for their first time they still have quite enough to be aware of and keep track of, without also having to keep a constant eye on the compass/map rather than the group and what the group is actually doing. To have them on top of that stop and figure out exactly which spot they're supposed to move to next - in a raid they haven't been in before, and on a map they haven't seen either - is a bit much to ask, and will most likely lead to them falling behind when the rest of the group moves and get killed by distributed damage. :P
On the other hand, most people already know what 'left' and 'right' is - even if they can't read a map or haven't done orienteering in school and know how to use a compass - so I can't think of easier instructions for Draigoch than: "Follow the shield/sun/whatever, and move either LEFT or RIGHT with the group when called out". No matter if you're a first-timer or a veteran! :D
