Spambot Prevention Question

Post by Balthelion » Thu Sep 29, 2011 9:53 am

Hey all, seems i need to add another spambot prevention question to forum signups. Any ideas for something blatantly obvious that anyone should know about LOTR.

Bear in mind:
  • People may spell names/places differently in their native language
  • People may not have read the books / seen the movies
  • Questions may have several answers (Q: Who is Frodo's best friend? A: Sam, Samwise, Sam Gamgee, Samwise Gamgee...)
  • ...

Possible Ideas:
  • What letter is missing from the following names: Fr_d_, Bilb_, Arag_rn, Elr_nd....
  • What is Frodo's Surname?
  • Which of these is NOT a lord of the rings character? Gandalf, Frodo, Gollum, Darth Vader

I think that a few static keywords is not enought, even we dont protect a bank site or something important, because a spambot could easily spam those answers. Maybe a CAPTCHA is better. And i know that is free

I think if you can implement Captcha you should only do it on login - getting one every post would be very annoying.

We already have Captcha. Because those systems are so common, spambots are designed to easily beat them.

That's why i want another bespoke system.

Simply putting in a custom question requiring users to select the middle number from: 1,2,3,4,5 (ie, 3) has meant virtually no spam over the last year (and without this, we would have 20 new spambots a day beating captcha).

Unfortunately one made it in earlier today, and officers have mentioned seeing one or two in the past, so i though i may as well add a second question, which should end it for good.

or you could add a system wherefore a user cannot post in anything until they have been registered and approved by the officer team.

To be fair this would work, and seeing as most officers are pretty active on these forums compared to most other users i think it would work. Also would allow people in game to shout if they had just signed up to the forums.

Personally you may not like this approval way of doing things but i would work and would stop the spam bots.

Now this is an idea and I am totally agree with it. Since the sign up density is not much (we only have 282 members so far), an officer can check the application and approves/disapproves daily or twice a day.
I am of course supporting this idea because I am not an officer hehe!

Errrrrm.

This works if we have no spambots.

If we are spammed 10 times a day...... who wants to reject all those applications?

To be honest, my rationale with that is it doesnt matter how many spam bots you clear from the request for accesses you still wont have any spam on your forums.

You're looking at it from the point of view that you can quickly reject all the spambots. Which may be fair enough, the user names are fairly nonsensical.... but in my experience with spam mail, if I turn off the spam filter, I am quickly overwhelmed. Finding the genuine requests among all the spam gets quite tricky.
